Continuous Deployment Helps Efficiently Scale Software Development Processes, Product Growth and Businesses, According to New Reports from Armory and Gartner Peer Insights
Data shows that ensuring reliable deployment is a top priority and deployment in multi-cloud environments is a major issue
SAN MATEO, Calif., November 15, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Arsenal, the Continuous Deployment (CD) company, has released new reports on the state of deployment practices. All three reports detail the current practices, priorities and pain points of development teams as they strive to accelerate their release cycles, increase application quality and reliability, and improve their customer experience. .
Armory and Gartner Peer Insights surveyed 400 engineering and operations professionals to better understand their current approach to deployment, efforts to improve speed to market, and common issues.
Key findings include:
The main application development and deployment priority is ensure reliable deployments.
The three main indicators for measuring quality are client satisfaction, competitive response and financial results.
The three main pain points are manual steps, lack of consistency and inability to deploy easily.
“These reports reveal the challenges faced by development teams, from manual processes to inconsistencies and complexity,” said Adam Frank, vice president of product, Armory. “Speed, quality and reliability of deployment are more important than ever, as is efficient product growth. This information helps us understand how to empower teams to build and deploy better products efficiently and at scale.
Continuous Deployment in Application Development
The report titled Continuous Deployment in Application Development examined continuous deployment (CD) usage and business motivations. More than 80% of respondents indicated that deployment reliability was their top priority when developing and deploying applications.
Survey results show that organizations are adopting continuous deployment to improve the quality and reliability of their application deployments. Automation is driving the adoption of continuous deployment, with many decision makers almost immediately seeing the benefits of a streamlined, less cumbersome process. More than half of respondents chose continuous deployment because of its ability to efficiently scale people, technology, and processes; reduction of personnel costs by saving time on manual tasks; streamline complex workflows and keep applications constantly up to date to increase customer satisfaction.
More than half (59%) say overly complex deployment in multi-cloud environments remains the top application development and deployment issue their engineering team needs to address.
The Enterprise-wide deployments The report analyzed companies’ efforts to accelerate time-to-market and effectively scale the growth of their products and businesses. After all, it’s no secret that for businesses to win in this software-driven world, they need to deploy at enterprise scale.
The most common cloud environment organizations deployed today are a multiple public cloud configuration and a private cloud. IT decision makers cite overly complex multi-cloud deployments as the number one issue to address when developing and deploying their applications. A quarter report that the main challenge is too long a delay between development and deployment.
The overwhelming majority (82%) of IT managers say ensuring reliable deployments is their top priority when developing and deploying applications. Only 9% say publishing faster than their competitors is a top priority. While more than half of IT leaders say their organization can deploy securely and reliably to different targets, 53% believe they have elite or near stability. Only a quarter believe their organization can reliably manage hundreds of applications or microservices.
The top three metrics respondents track to measure the quality of software deployment are customer satisfaction, competitive response, and financial results and stakeholder feedback.
Software Deployment Issues and Developer Risks
Software developers need to be able to focus on writing code and creating differentiating value, not deploying code. Due to the complexity of development, teams face many pain points, which are revealed in the Software Deployment Issues and Developer Risks report.
The average team works with over 20 deployment environments, and GitHub and GitLab are the most common ways teams use to trigger their deployments. Deployment frequency is the top metric of deployment success, selected by 52% of engineering and operations leaders.
The most frequently reported problem: too many manual steps. About half of respondents also cited a lack of consistency and the inability to easily deploy new software versions alongside old ones. Poor processes and workflows are the primary cause of these challenges, followed closely by developer talent and the organization’s technology stack.
“This report highlights the ongoing challenges and emerging needs of the developer community. Armory is dedicated to innovative solutions to address critical issues and remove developer deployment demands,” said jim douglasCEO, Armory.
