Bosch acquires Five to accelerate software development for automated driving
Five gave Bosch preference over other bidders. Both companies share a common vision of automated driving and safe automated driving systems. The agreements with Five were signed in early April. It was agreed that financial details will not be disclosed. The acquisition is still subject to the approval of the competition authorities.

Since its inception in 2016, Five has built a team of experts in cloud software, security assurance, robotics and machine learning, and placed itself at the forefront of cutting-edge software development and solutions based on artificial intelligence. for autonomous driving, via SAE level 4.
The startup is now primarily focused on a cloud-based development and testing platform for software used in self-driving cars. This gives engineers the programs they need to quickly build automated driving software and test it before and during deployment in test vehicles. At Bosch, Five will strengthen the company’s agile project structure for the development of self-driving cars. The software engineering environments of both teams complement each other very well and will be merged to form a single solution.
For Bosch, moreover, the acquisition is a further step towards consolidating its position in the software and automated driving market. The company only recently expanded its portfolio by acquiring Atlatec GmbH, a specialist in the field of high-resolution digital maps. Only Bosch will be able to offer its customers all the necessary building blocks for automated driving from a single source: from actuators, sensors and boards to software and the engineering environment.
For Bosch, automated driving is and will remain a strategic business area. Bosch takes a two-pronged approach. On the one hand, with the aim of making driving safer and more relaxed, it develops solutions for passenger cars with an emphasis on driver assistance and partially and conditionally automated systems (SAE levels 1 to 3).
On the other hand, the team is also working on solutions for higher levels of automation, with a focus on fleet vehicles and new operating models. In the logistics sector in particular, Bosch sees attractive applications and market potential for SAE Level 4 automated driving systems. In addition, Bosch has already developed automated valet parking, the first production-ready driving function not to require a driver.
